Axial Housing is a Housing First project in Canberra, developed to provide permanent housing and support to 20 people who have experienced long term homelessness, with complex needs. CatholicCare was awarded a Grant to End Homelessness to support this project. As a result of Covid-19, additional funding from the ACT Government has enable them to support another 12 people, taking the total to 32 participants.
A partnership between CatholicCare Canberra Goulburn and Housing ACT supports this initiative, along with various homelessness service providers, offering intensive outreach services to the tenants.
A total of 33 people have been housed, with 26 people living independently. Of the seven who have left Axial, most have relocated to family or moved into a new relationship.
These impressive results show that Housing First works. The lives of 33 people who were experiencing the trauma and danger of surviving on the streets, are now living in their own safe and secure home and looking forward to a healthier, brighter future.
Axial Housing is building a reputation as a trusted service, illustrated by the fact that 50% of their participants were referred by other rough sleepers.
We congratulate CatholicCare Canberra Goulburn for this outstanding project.
